Based out of our Nedlands Café & Drive Thru site, we manually micro roast our beans in small batches on our trusty Diedrich IR12 coffee roaster, ensuring every batch is meticulously managed & quality tested.

OUR STORY

For over a decade, Gary Griffiths, along with his wife Clare, have been involved in the Perth coffee industry, and in July 2014, they became the outright owners of Rocketfuel Coffee Roasters.

Perth’s coffee culture is evolving rapidly and customers are becoming more discerning in what they drink. At Rocketfuel, we are on a constant journey in coffee education and training of our staff to ensure we are up to date with the latest trends in the coffee industry, whilst at the same time, staying true to what we believe in, which is delivering delicious coffee along with excellent customer service.

A dedicated family run business, Rocketfuel is evolving into a Specialty micro roaster with our focus on quality rather than quantity.

Our Beans

To earn specialty coffee classification, beans must be of a certain quality & are scored according to that quality through a grading process conducted by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA).

Coffee’s, which are scored 80 points or more on a 100 point scale in the SCAA score sheet, are classed as “Specialty”.

These coffee’s are different from the more commercial grade coffee due to a more rigorous & quality control process, The end result producing bean’s with more unique quality & distinctive flavours.

Here at Rocketfuel, in partnership with our independent brokers, we source our green beans from various locations around the globe & only use beans that are in the “Specialty” grade.

An advantage of purchasing Specialty grade beans either directly from the farm or through small co-operatives, is whereby the farmer is able to be supported financially, receiving a higher price of bean allowing us to contribute to the sustainability and development of the farm, its people and its infrastructure.

At Rocketfuel we purchase from direct trade partners or smaller co-operatives whenever possible to ensure ethical trading, sustainability and transparency.

The roast

As a process, coffee is as similar in complexity to wine making, and to ensure the best end product, every step, and every piece of equipment, must be both top quality and consistently maintained.

We roast our beans in small batches on a 12kg Roaster at Rocketfuel and are always tweaking our profiles and striving to get more deliciousness out of each individual bean.

The quality of the end product of a roasted bean can be determined by how it is sourced, by purchasing green bean of the highest calibre and having the information on how it is harvested and processed, We know the bean has been handled correctly and we know that we can achieve amazing things by carefully roasting it to extract its true potential.

We adjust our roasting profiles to suit the beans characteristics, by examining the bean’s size, density and moisture content, we can determine a roast profile and by carefully and methodically managing the profile, we can aim to roast it to the best potential. Our aim is to draw out the natural sugars to achieve maximum sweetness in the cup and maximize its characteristics. Lots of slurping and spitting on the cupping table gives us the best feedback on how the bean has roasted in a particular way.
